Seven emerging design trends from\u00a0 Fancy front entrances, statement lighting\u2014and a barn-style living area\u2014are among the designs landing on this summer’s hot trends list. Let’s have a look at the top trends based on a recent survey of homeowners and design professionals.<\/p>\n

1 – Gardens<\/strong> – Outside space continues to be the main focus for remodelers, with more than half of renovation projects incorporating outdoor upgrades, according to a recent study. Homeowners also are seeking to cut back on maintenance, exploring \u201cdrought-tolerant landscaping ideas,\u201d a phrase for which online searches have doubled over the last year. Overall, searches geared toward outdoor enjoyment are increasing; \u201chot tub decks,\u201d for example, have more than doubled in searches year over year.<\/p>\n

2 – Entrances<\/strong> – Homeowners are looking to make a better first impression by turning their attention to the front entrance. Searches are increasing for \u201ciron front doors\u201d and \u201cfront door handles,\u201d The report also notes an increase in searches for green and red front doors. Meanwhile, searches for black, blue and yellow front doors are dropping in popularity.<\/p>\n

3 – Lighting<\/strong> – The lighting fixtures are the statement piece in a room, not just to brighten up a space but to add style. Homeowners are showing greater interest in \u201cextra-large chandeliers,\u201d \u201clantern chandeliers,\u201d \u201cindustrial pendant lights,\u201d and \u201cwicker pendants.\u201d Other popular lighting fixtures, which have doubled in searches over the past year, are \u201ckitchen ceiling lights,\u201d \u201cflush mounted lighting,\u201d and \u201ctask lighting,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n

4 – Channeling Midcentury Modern<\/strong> – Homeowners are showing more interest in this style: The report shows that searches are increasing for \u201cmid-century modern bedroom ideas\u201d and \u201cmid-century modern exterior home ideas\u201d as well as materials that evoke the style, such as \u201ckit kat tile,\u201d \u201cboucl\u00e9\u201d and \u201ccurved sofa.\u201d<\/p>\n

5 – Open Plan Style<\/strong> – Homes inspired by the \u201copen plan\u201d style, which includes a wide-open floor plan similar to a barn, are gaining popularity. The report notes that online searches for the term \u201copen plan living\u201d have more than doubled over the last year. \u201cFor those who may not be looking for whole-home conversions, searches for \u2018open plan kitchens\u2019 have also more than doubled,\u201d the report notes. \u201cCommon characteristics include clean lines, soaring ceilings, and open floor plans.\u201d<\/p>\n

6 – Making Spaces Feel Large<\/strong>r – Since the pandemic started, people have been using and repurposing every square inch of their home. So, with extra clutter, homeowners are looking for ways to make their rooms appear larger. That may be why searches have doubled for \u201cstacking washer dryers\u201d to maximize space in a utility room or \u201challway cabinets\u201d to utilize underused areas. Homeowners also are searching for design styles that can open up a room: Searches are increasing for items like \u201cacrylic counter stools\u201d and \u201copen tread staircase,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n

7 – Designing for pets<\/strong> – More homeowners have become pet owners during the pandemic, which has influenced their design choices. Searches for \u201cdog feeding stations\u201d have jumped 55% over the past year, and \u201cchair seat covers\u201d also are up, the report notes.<\/p>\n
